Three-Dimensional Particle-in-Cell Simulations for Fast IgnitionPrincipal Investigator: Chuang RenAffiliation: University of Rochester Co-Investigators: Warren B. Mori, University of California, Los Angeles This project, led by Chuang Ren of the University of Rochester, was awarded 2 million hours to carry out large-scale Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations of the ignition phase in FI. The ignition phase determines the coupling of the ignition laser to the target core and thus the viability of FI. It is a major part of the integrated efforts within the new Department of Energy Fusion Science Center for Extreme States of Matter and Fast Ignition Physics to develop an understanding of the physics of FI and related high energy density science. It will also provide urgently-needed support for planned OMEGA-EP experiments starting in 2008. |
