Logging In to Bassi

Interactive Access

Bassi's DNS name is bassi.nersc.gov. Remote access to Bassi is available only via software which uses the the Secure Shell (SSH) protocol 2. An example command from a UNIX system is:

% ssh -l username bassi.nersc.gov

When you SSH to Bassi you will connect randomly to one of Bassi's two interactive nodes.

For more information about SSH, please see Connecting to NERSC and Secure Shell (SSH).

Passwords & Login Shell Changes

Your Bassi password is the same as your NIM password. Passwords cannot be changed directly on Bassi , but rather through the NIM web account interface. NIM is also used to change the default login shell on Bassi.

If you cannot successfully log into Bassi, try resetting your password through the NIM interface. If you cannot log into NIM, call the NERSC account support office at 1-800-66-NERSC, menu option 2 (or 1-510-486-8612).

Other Network Access

Outbound network ports, including the one for ftp, are open from the Bassi login nodes.

By default, all incoming network ports, except that for SSH, are blocked on Bassi. Special requests for opening ports on Bassi can be submitted via a web form.
