Operating System Environment

The operating system on the SP is a flavor of UNIX known as AIX. While AIX does not use modules, third-party and public domain software are accessible through modules.

Vendors provide the csh and ksh/sh login shells. NERSC has also installed the shells tcsh and bash and the scripting shells tk/tcl and python.

Modules
With the modules approach, users simply ``load'' and ``unload'' modules to control their environment.
Shells and Scripting
Using the login shells csh and ksh, the additional shells tcsh and bash, and the tcl, python and perl scripting languages.
GNU
GNU tools and commands are available in a module.
