NERSC Website

NERSC unveiled this website on May 26, 2004. It replaces the old version of the www.nersc.gov website and replaces the old hpcf.nersc.gov and pdsf.nersc.gov web sites.

Navigation Banner

The major sections of the site may be reached immediately by clicking on the appropriate title in the banner that appears at the top of each page.

Searching

To search the NERSC website, type a word or phrase into the Search box at the top of each page and click "Search", or click on the "Search NERSC" link to be redirected to the NERSC search page.

Web authentication

NERSC users can gain access to restricted pages by logging in to the website. (A few pages may still be protected by a single username/password for all NERSC users, which can be found using the issuing the command module help WWW on any NERSC system.

Web standards

NERSC web pages strive to conform to XHTML 1.0 specifications (January 2000) as published by the World Wide Web Consortium.

XHTML is a family of current and future document types and modules that reproduce, subset, and extend HTML 4 (December 1999). XHTML family document types are XML based, and ultimately are designed to work in conjunction with XML-based user agents.HTML 4 [HTML4] is an SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) application conforming to International Standard ISO 8879, and is widely regarded as the standard publishing language of the World Wide Web.

The web site also uses Cascading Style Sheets, adhering to the Level 2 specification of May 1998.

Web browsers

All functions and features of the web site should work correctly with browsers that support the above standards. In addition, pages should display in a readable and (hopefully) attractive manner.

A special effort has been made to support basic functionality for Netscape 4 browsers; however, pages may not be rendered in a visually pleasing way. (Functionality was last added to Netscape 4 in 1998, so it does not support current standards.) While once dominant, Netscape 4 usage by NERSC users is falling rapidly as shown in the graph below. In addition, writing separate code specifically to support Netscape 4 is a tedious and time-consuming enteprise; thus, the site has only minimal support for Netscape 4. (An analogy that might be appreciated by NERSC users: coding for Netscape 4 is like writing Fortran code using only F77 syntax and in addition using a very buggy compiler!) Mozilla offers a free compliant browser for Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, OpenVMS, OS/2, Solaris (inc. x86), AIX, HPUX, IRIX, and Tru64.
