Basic Research and Human Resources

With respect to basic research and human resources the user community needs to be both involved in and have access to the results of extensive basic research efforts. The High Performance Computing and Communications Initiative Grand Challenge programs and the research efforts in the High Performance Computing Research Centers have provided much valuable insight. The NERSC user community now has the opportunity to put these developments into a true production environment. Cross-disciplinary exchanges and collaborations in addition to the ``Users Helping Users'' program should be encouraged to implement these new capabilities and identify additional opportunities in computational science.
