Database Servers

There are two primary functions that database servers fulfill; one is at the user archival level and the other is as information servers based on query languages. Examples of the archival type are the common file system (CFS) and the high performance storage system (HPSS) that are used at NERSC for data storage and data migration. The second function takes the form of integrated hardware and software to perform specific data base aggregation and search functions. These include database servers that are on the world wide web and those available throughout the ER user community. As the complexity and size of data mining problems increase, fully integrated data management systems will need to be developed.
