The Office of Biological and Environmental Research
manages the Department's Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program.
BER's extraordinary legacy spans 50 years and includes these four areas:
- Life Sciences: The Health Effects and Life Sciences Research
Division administers research programs to develop fundamental biological
information and to advance technologies for use in research on the health
effects of energy-related agents and processes.
- Medical Applications and Biophysical Research: The Biological and
Environmental Research Medical Applications and Biophysical Research
Division supports research in several distinct areas of science and
technology that address a broad range of fundamental and applied research
applications in medicine and biophysics.
- Environmental Processes: Global Change Research: The Global Change
activities include the process research and modeling efforts needed to
- improve understanding of factors affecting the Earth's
radiant-energy balance;
- predict accurately any global and regional climate change induced by
increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases;
- quantify sources and sinks of energy-related greenhouse gases,
especially carbon dioxide; and
- improve the scientific basis for assessing the potential consequences
of climatic changes, including the potential ecological,
social, and economic implications of human-induced climatic changes caused
by increases in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and the benefits and costs
of alternative response options.
- Environmental Remediation: The Environmental Remediation research
portfolio is focused on developing an understanding of the fundamental
physical, chemical, geological, and biological processes that must be
marshaled for the development and advancement of new, effective, and
efficient processes for the remediation and restoration of the Nation's
nuclear weapons production sites.
