Greetings Seaborg User,
NERSC staff will be purging Seaborg's /scratch filesystem of old files
tomorrow (Thursday, September 14), starting at 14:00 PDT. This note
provides an explanation of the process, and concludes with a request for
user cooperation. Please read this entire message!
The /scratch filesystem on Seaborg is intended for short-term storage
of large datasets, typically created by batch jobs. It is not backed up;
users are responsible for devising their own long-term storage strategies,
using our HPSS or other archival storage systems.
When /scratch utilization exceeds 90%, files are removed until utilization
drops to 80%. Files are selected for removal based strictly on age; no file
accessed in the previous seven days will be removed during the purge process.
We normally purge files a few times each year and usually do _not_
announce purges before they happen. So why are we announcing this one?
This is our second purge in less than a month. The more frequently we
have to purge, the newer the files that get removed. To reduce the frequency
of purging, we would like to ask that all users be considerate of the intended
use of /scratch. Please remove files that are not being accessed on a daily
basis (after saving them in HPSS or a non-NERSC facility). Also, when a
batch job completes, please remove any scratch files that were generated
during the run but are not useful after the run.
With your cooperation, we hope to reduce the number of purges that are
required to deliver adequate available storage to running batch jobs.
If you need help devising a storage strategy, or have any questions about
NERSC filesystems and policies, please contact NERSC Consulting at:
