Greetings NERSC SP User, NERSC is pleased to announce its next training event, to be held on Monday, December 8. Mark Durst, of NERSC's User Services Group, will be presenting the following talks: 9:00 - 11:00 PST Debugging Parallel Programs with Totalview Debugging with Other Tools These classes will discuss debugging programs on the NERSC IBM SP. We will begin with the TotalView graphical debugger on the IBM SP, an essential tool for understanding what is happening when parallel programs go wrong. We'll describe how to set up codes for use with TotalView and how to run them under its control; how to set breakpoints within the code; how to monitor (and change!) values in running codes; and, time permitting, how to examine core files produced when a program crashes. We'll go on to describe other strategies for debugging programs, which will be a grab-bag of programming techniques, problem checklist, and other useful tools when symbolic debugging via Totalview will not fill the bill. There will be a 5 minute break between the two lectures, at approximately 10:00 PST. The lectures will be presented on the Access Grid, with an accompanying audio conference, and experimental live streaming on the Web via Real Media. Complete information, including links to the presentation materials, may be found at: http://hpcf.nersc.gov/training/classes/current.php All NERSC users are welcome to attend. To reserve a seat for attendance in person, please contact training_at_nersc_dot_gov. Attendance via the Access Grid, by teleconference, or via Real Player is free to all interested parties. We also solicit feedback on the media streaming: how well does it work for you, and which system/browser combination do you use to access it? -- Best regards, David Turner User Services Group email: dpturner_at_lbl_dot_gov NERSC Division phone: (510) 486-4027 Lawrence Berkeley Lab fax: (510) 486-4316
