Index New replacement machine for "escher"

From: Kenneth Schwartz (ksschwartz_at_lbl.gov)
Date: 09/26/2002

Dear Escher users,

There is a new replacement machine for "escher" the visualization
auxiliary server at NERSC. The new machine is a SGI Onyx 3400 with 12
600 MHz IP35 processors, 24 GB memory, 2 Infinite Reality 3 graphics
pipes, 3 gigabit ethernet interfaces and a 4 TB RAID-5 disk
array. This will replace the existing SGI Onyx 2 platform.

1. Change of hostnames

In order to retain the same name "escher" for the new machine,
we will change the name of the current machine to "oldescher"
on Monday, October 7, 2002.

2. Migration of login names

On Monday, October 7, you will be able to login to the old machine, as
oldescher.nersc.gov, and to the new machine, as escher.nersc.gov,
using your same "escher" login name.

Although the new machine will have the same name (escher.nersc.gov)
and IP address as the old machine, the SSH host key will be different.
This may cause ssh or scp to report "host key has changed" or
"possible man in the middle attack". If this occurs, simply remove
the entries refering to escher in your local known_hosts file(s):
$HOME/.ssh/known_hosts and $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts2 The next time you
connect you can choose "yes" to accept this corrected key.

3. Obtaining passwords for new "escher.nersc.gov"

Passwords for your existing login name on the new machine
must be obtained by calling NERSC Account Support at
1-800-66-NERSC (option 2) or (510)486-8612.

4. Users must migrate their own files from "oldescher" to "escher"

We will not migrate any files from the old machine to the new machine.
Users should migrate all files from "oldescher" to "escher" using scp.

5. Removal of existing SGI Onyx2 machine on October 30, 2002

We expect to remove the old Visualization server from service on October
30, 2002.

6. Software available on new platform "escher"

The following software has been installed on the new Vis server:
