Dear NERSC users,
With the beginning of the new FY 2001 fiscal year and allocation cycle
on October 1, 2000, a number of changes will take place that could
affect you. These changes are documented at this web site:
http://hpcf.nersc.gov/news/announcements/oct1.html
Some of the more important changes are summarized below:
* The absolute path names to home directories will be changing
on the Cray PVP cluster and on the Cray T3E. Scripts that
use these absolute path names will fail after Oct. 1.
Please review any shell scripts, configuration files, input files,
and/or source codes that contain explicit references to home
directories, and replace those references with $HOME.
For information on using file system environment variables see:
http://hpcf.nersc.gov/storage/env.html
* Starting October 1 NERSC will use new software to manage accounts,
as well as accounting and user information. The new system will be
called the NERSC Information Management (NIM) system and it will
replace the existing CUB.
In order to transition between CUB and NIM, we will not be able to add
any new users to NERSC systems between September 18, 2000 and September
30, 2000. Requests to add new users received during this time period
will be implemented after October 1.
A snapshot of the existing CUB database will be taken on September 18 to
create the new NIM database. Because of this, any changes (other than
time transfers made by account managers) made using the "setcub" command
after September 18 will be lost. This refers to changes such as using
"setcub" to change your email alias. Please note: accounting data will
be maintained and "setcub" will continue to accurately report usage
information.
The "setcub" command will be disabled on Oct. 1. Scripts that rely on
the "setcub" command will fail. Users will get accounting and related
information via a web interface (details to be announced later). We
have designed a new "getnim" command line interface which can be used
in scripts to get repo and user balances. "getnim" will have only
limited functionality compared to the "setcub" command. See:
http://hpcf.nersc.gov/accounts/nim/getnim.html
