[Users] Accelerated access to GUI-based applications at NERSC

Dear NERSC User,

In the 2007 NERSC user survey, we received feedback about insufficient
interactivity when using graphical user interface (GUI)-based
applications at NERSC over slow network connections. We currently are
testing an X11 alternative that promises to make GUI-based applications
more usable over slow, high-latency network connections.

If you are interested in trying this new technology, you can find
detailed setup instructions at

http://vis.lbl.gov/NERSC/HowTos/FreeNXDaVinci/.

Our preliminary experiences in testing this solution are very promising.
However, we hope to collect more information from a test launch and
would appreciate any feedback that you can provide after trying NX.
While currently this service is only available to access DaVinci, it
should also be possible to use NX to accelerate access to other NERSC
systems. Simply open a remote desktop on DaVinci using NX and use ssh
from the remote desktop to connect to another NERSC machine such as
Franklin.

If you encounter any problems in testing this new service, please
contact consult@nersc.gov, and we will be happy to assist you in
resolving them. Please send any feedback to consult@nersc.gov as well.

Best regards,

Gunther H. Weber
