Dear Franklin users,

Franklin quad core upgrade phase 2 is going to start tomorrow (Wed,
August 13) at 7am PDT. The scheduled system maintenance and dedicated IO
testing are expected to finish at 9pm PDT. Franklin queue has started
to be drained, and jobs could not be completed before 7am tomorrow will
not run.

Franklin will then be back in production with 3 columns of quad core
nodes and 14 columns of dual core nodes. Please refer to the detailed
information along with the user environment changes, usage guide and
examples for phase 2 at:
https://www.nersc.gov/nusers/systems/franklin/quadcore_upgrade.php#phase2

An important notice about publishing performance results on the quad
core nodes (not allowed before Franklin quad core upgrade is completed
and accepted) is at:
https://www.nersc.gov/nusers/systems/franklin/quadcore_upgrade.php#notice

To encourage usage, Franklin charging for the quad core nodes during
phase 2 is free. The charging factor on the dual core nodes during phase
2 remains to be 6.5.

Also there are some changes on the software packages:

1) libsci/10.2.1 and gcc/4.2.0.quadcore have been installed on Franklin
and set to default. These two modules work for both quad core and dual
core environment.

2) xt-mpt/3.0.2 has been installed on Franklin. To use, users need to
load this module and recompile:

  % module swap xt-mpt/2.0.53b xt-mpt/3.0.2
  % ftn ...
  % cc ...
  % CC ...

The xt-mpt/3.0.2 works for both dual core and quad core nodes. We plan
to set it to the default version starting from phase 2b (tentative date:
Aug 21).

Best Regards,

Helen He
