NERSC is preparing to upgrade Franklin to a quad-core XT4 system starting next Tuesday, July 15th. The upgrade work will be carried out in multiple phases in order to have minimal impact on your access to the system. The system will be divided into two sections during the upgrade: a "production environment" that you will have continued access to, with very brief periods of system unavailability, and a "test environment" where the upgrade work is being performed. Each of the current 2.6 GHz dual-core chips will be swapped with a quad-core chip containing four 2.3 GHz AMD Opteron processor cores. Each compute node will also be upgraded to 8 GB memory, shared by all cores within the node, keeping the same average 2 GB/core memory as we have now. For more details on the upgrade, including a detailed time line, please see http://www.nersc.gov/nusers/resources/franklin/quadcore_upgrade.php -- Jonathan Carter Group Leader, User Services jtcarter@lbl.gov NERSC Division tel: 510-486-7514 Berkeley Lab fax: 510-486-4316
